Maersk clears the decks for action against delayed vessels

Maersk has set out to achieve that 95 percent of the containers arrive on time. Today only 70 percent do that, which means that there are 30 percent to go.

-So there is clearly a very big part that is not delivered within one day from the fixed time. One of our most important priorities is consequently to raise the reliability, says Morten Engelstoft, head of operational management in Maersk Line. He estimates that the company may save about 1.5 billion DKK annually by delivering on time in 95 percent of the cases. Additionally this may help the shipping company to gain further market shares.
-High reliability is one of the top-3-criterions when the customers chose shipping company. Therefore it will make a big difference if we reach the 95 percent level, since this will outdistance our competitors, he says.
To reach the target Maersk Line will have to make sailing timetables more realistic, and the communication between suppliers, port terminals and vessels are to be improved.
Today, already, Maersk is leading when it comes to accuracy. For the rest of the containership trade only 50 – 60 percent of the vessels arrive on time.
